Large ICT companies, such as Dell, Analog Devices and Intel, have a long history of development in the region. While the recent arrival of both Regeneron Biopharma and Ethicon Biosurgery in 2014 has boosted an already strong Life Sciences sector that features Johnson & Johnson, Zimmer, Stryker and Cook Medical.
Collaboration with the University of Limerick’s research capabilities has seen clusters of expertise develop in both the ICT and Life Sciences sectors. This has developed key centres of knowledge in Advanced Manufacturing, Sales and Customer Support, Sub Supply Chain and Logistics, and Advanced Research and Development activities.
Multinational companies in the Mid West are spoilt for choice when it comes to access to highly qualified graduates. There are three universities and three Institutes of Technology within the Limerick catchment area, providing a student cohort of around 67,000, which results in approximately 21,000 graduates every year. Directly located within the region, University of Limerick and Limerick Institute of Technology provide strong research and development linkages. The National Research Institutes of Excellence, including Lero (Software), the National Pharma Tech and Composites Research Centres, and Materials & Surface Science Institute, are also located in the region.
Limerick city offers a wealth of arts, entertainment, restaurants and museums. However, a short drive from the metropolis opens a world of lush scenery, a rugged Atlantic coast, cultural and historical treasures, and sporting activities including world-class surfing and some of the best links golf courses in the world. The location is well serviced by road and rail, while Shannon International Airport (which has full US customs pre clearance and is just 25 minutes from Limerick City) provides regular daily flights to the US, UK and Europe.
