Press Release 10 Jan 2017

10th January, 2017 - Martin Shanahan, CEO of IDA Ireland said: “On behalf of IDA Ireland, I would like to extend my sympathies to the family of Dr.TK Whitaker on the passing of their loved one.”

"Dr.TK Whitaker's legacy extends far beyond the economic and he will be remembered as the very finest exemplar of public service.”

"If it were not for his policies, Ireland would not have the modern economy that we have today. It is also reasonable to say that IDA Ireland, in its current form, would not exist were it not for the policies that he espoused in the 50s and 60s."

"Dr.TK Whitaker’s policies propelled Ireland into modernity and they allowed us to catch up with the rest of the world – his policies increased living standards for people in the subsequent decades."

"In practical terms, Dr. TK Whitaker’s thinking facilitated the growth of the foreign investment community in Ireland – this community directly employs over 200,000 people in multinationals and indirectly supports many more jobs across Ireland today. These companies also export over €149bn annually from Ireland. Were it not for Dr.TK Whitaker’s foresight, Ireland’s journey to arrive at the modern economy that we know today may never have happened."

"Dr.TK Whitaker encouraged us to look beyond our shores for the economic prosperity we desired as a nation. His courage and determination to persuade others of the need to create a more open economy in Ireland laid the foundations for the employment we see today in multinational companies across Ireland.”
