Ireland’s 15 year olds performing significantly above OECD average, says PISA results

Dublin, 3rd December 2013 – IDA Ireland today welcomed the OECD ‘Programme for International Student Assessment’ (PISA) results which show that in 2012, Ireland’s 15 year olds scored significantly above the OECD average in maths and science.

Strong school performance in science and maths is a strong indicator of how innovative an economy is, said the agency.

CEO of IDA Ireland Barry O’Leary said: “One of the primary reasons cited by IDA clients for establishing their operations in Ireland is the availability of skilled labour. A large number of FDI companies seek graduates with backgrounds in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).  It is encouraging to see students at second level score significantly above the OECD average in print mathematics and science in 2012.”

As many of the world’s leading multinational companies continue to select Ireland as a leading location for their Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), it is important to consider where the best job opportunities for the future will lie.

Based on current job creation trends within Ireland, sectors like information and communication technology (ICT), digital media and language-based business courses are likely to provide strong career opportunities for students in the years ahead.

Students planning now for their future careers need to take this growth into account and consider in which sectors the greatest FDI job opportunities will be in the coming years.

“IDA Ireland recognises that whilst the results are encouraging and on the right track, it is important that Ireland Inc enhances its competitive edge in the STEM sectors to ensure that we continue to attract quality investment from leading global corporations,” said O’Leary.
