As the newest member of IDA Ireland's West Coast team, I thought I'd share a bit about my recent move to the United States along with my new role.
Earlier this year, I was delighted to be offered a position with IDA's business development team in the West Coast of the US. I took up the role in August, having transferred from IDA's head office in Dublin to California. It's quite common for a business development executive at IDA Ireland to be transferred to any one of our office locations in the United States, so I certainly wasn't short on colleagues to lean on for advice on the move and tips for my new role. This definitely helped me to prepare for the move.
Such overseas assignments with IDA are typically 3-5 years in duration, where the executive is tasked with developing relationships with decision makers in companies in specific sectors and work closely with those who establish their European operations in Ireland. I am based in IDA's Southern California office which is located in Irvine, Calif. The last couple of months have flown by and have been extremely interesting.
Firstly, I needed to ensure that I had all of the prerequisites in place in order to carry out my new role in Southern California; namely: find a place to live, get my California driver license, buy a car (which is a must-have for anyone living in Southern California who needs to commute regularly), along with getting a laptop and phone. All of that is now in place, but almost three months in to my new role, I’m still adjusting to the warmer climate out here along with a slightly more casual dress code (no necktie required) at many of my meetings and client events. That being said, these are two things that I can definitely see myself getting used to!
I work with companies that are predominantly headquartered in the Southwest territory that consists of Southern California, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico - within a wide variety of sectors including online, consumer, professional business services, engineering, aerospace, automotive and clean technologies. So far, I have found the role both interesting and fulfilling. I very much look forward to what the next few years will bring.
