Why work for Etsy

There are over 90 million items for sale in the Etsy marketplace, many of which are unique, handmade, or can be personalized and customized. These items are lovingly crafted or curated by over 4 million sellers, most of whom are women and businesses of one, making Etsy one of the largest on ramps for female entrepreneurism in the world. Etsy’s sellers are the heart and soul of the company, and their technology platform allows anyone to turn a creative passion into economic opportunity with just 20 cents for their first listing.

Whether someone joins Etsy as an engineer, product manager, or customer service representative; as their first job or decades into their career, there’s one thing they all have in common: the ability to have an impact. Etsy empowers employees to work on high-impact projects that positively affect the millions of creative entrepreneurs who sell on their platform.

Etsy’s mission to “Keep Commerce Human,” goes beyond simply connecting buyers and sellers within the marketplace: it also means having a positive impact on their community, the environment, and the global economy. That’s the beauty of Etsy: you can see your work make a true difference in people’s lives and have a lasting impact.

Forbes named Etsy in the Just 100: Companies Leading the New Era of Responsible Capitalism and Etsy made Fortune’s Change the World List.

Like all Etsy locations, the Dublin office is environmentally friendly, exceptionally cosy, and showcases items made by Etsy sellers. While offices have remained closed throughout the pandemic, Etsy is continuing to invest in their physical spaces, adapting them for a safe and collaborative future.

Etsy also focuses on inclusive, flexible practices adapted to meet the needs of their growing workforce. Etsy has opened many of their roles to remote candidates, and existing employees can apply to be fully or partially remote.

Etsy currently employs 1,414 globally, with nearly 100 based in the Dublin office on the city’s northside. Etsy.com has 4.7 million active sellers and 90.7 million active buyers. Etsy’s community is truly global in nature with buyers and sellers in nearly every country in the world. Its core markets are the US, UK, Germany, Canada, Australia, France and India.

The roles

Etsy wants its employees to make a lasting impact by tackling unique problems alongside talented coworkers and teams. The company is large enough that employees will get a chance to focus on meaningful complex challenges, but small enough that employees can make a rewarding impact.

Developers at Etsy solve some of the most interesting and complex challenges in e-commerce to create the very best user experience. For example, with millions of unstructured listings, improving search and discovery requires developing and applying some of the most innovative applications of machine learning. Etsy ships code early and often using pioneering continuous deployment system. Engineers primarily code in PHP and JavaScript, but also use Java, Go, and Swift.

Expanding diversity, equity, and inclusion across Etsy’s entire business

Etsy has a long-standing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion deeply intertwined in their mission to “Keep Commerce Human.” It drives and inspires their work which, they believe, makes Etsy a stronger, more resilient business. And it’s about a lot more than good intentions. Etsy sets lofty goals rooted in transparency and accountability and then publicly reports on progress.

Etsy pledges net zero carbon emissions by 2030

Etsy serves as a trailblazer when it comes to sustainability. They’ve long held ambitious goals, from powering their marketplace with 100% renewable electricity to running zero waste operations globally. Etsy became the first global ecommerce company to offset carbon emissions from shipping in early 2019. And this year, Etsy is deepening their commitment to a sustainable future and unveiling a new goal to reach net zero emissions by 2030. Etsy was also recently named one of Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies Right Now.

Supporting employees and sellers during Covid

Over the past year, Etsy has made decisions on how to navigate the crisis based on one guiding philosophy: to focus on keeping our community members safe and our business thriving. Etsy provides resources for employees and contractors, prioritising pay continuity, safety, mental health and the ability to care for their families during this time. Etsy has also prioritised its community of sellers around the world, providing education, resources and direct support, as well as advocating on the community’s behalf with EU and US legislators.
