ZMDI establishes R&D centre in Limerick

After considering a number of global locations for this strategically important R&D centre, we decided that Limerick was the perfect fit for our company due to the research expertise in the University of Limerick, the availability of engineering skills, the cluster of many leading players in electronics in the region and the support of IDA Ireland.

Limerick, 09th May 2012 Minister for Finance Michael Noonan TD today announced that, ZMDI, a semiconductor company focused on energy efficiency, is establishing an R&D design centre in Limerick.  The company will create 35 highly skilled engineering positions for graduates and technicians over 5 years, with the support of Government, through IDA Ireland.

The R&D centre will focus on the development of products for the smart power management sector, which is a key growth area driven by the demand for increased energy efficiency in data centre cooling, telecommunications and high-end computing.

Making the announcement Minister Noonan said “The addition of ZMDI to Limerick is a major endorsement of Ireland’s capabilities in the area of analog and mixed signal electronics and R&D.  The company will provide excellent employment opportunities in the Mid –West region for talented engineering graduates and technicians.” 

Commenting on the announcement Bernhard Huber ZMDI’s Business Line Manager said “After considering a number of global locations for this strategically important R&D centre, we decided that Limerick was the perfect fit for our company due to the research expertise in the University of Limerick, the availability of engineering skills, the cluster of many leading players in electronics in the region and the support of IDA Ireland.” Mr. Huber further stated that “ZMDI has made many global expansion investments in 2012 and our facility in Limerick fits prominently within that strategy”

Welcoming the announcement CEO IDA Ireland, Barry O’Leary said “IDA is very pleased to support this centre, as it will create highly skilled positions in a regional location, which is a key focus of IDA’s strategy for regional development in Gateway locations.  The centre is an important addition to the cluster of power management electronics in Limerick and will position the Mid-West region, through its collaboration with University of Limerick, at the forefront of research in energy efficient power management solutions.”
