The North West region comprises of three counties - Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim. It has a population of over 236,656 (2006 Census). The principal towns in the Region include Sligo, Carrick-on-Shannon and Letterkenny.
The region is very accessible by road, air and rail. National primary routes include the N17 to Galway, N15 to Sligo, N4/N2 to Dublin, N16/A6 Enniskillen/Belfast and N13 to Derry. Air access is provided by regional airports in Sligo, Carrickfinn, Derry, Ireland West Airport Knock and the International and City Airports in Belfast with daily scheduled flights to Dublin and UK for onward connection to Europe and US destinations. Continental Airlines have direct flights from Belfast International Airport to Newark Airport in the US. Daily rail connections also run between Sligo and Dublin.

Two Institutes of Technology are located in the region, situated in Sligo and Letterkenny with a combined student enrolment of over 9,300 students with c. 3,000 graduates. A broad range of courses is provided in Business, Engineering, Science, Nursing, Computing and Design. Both Institutes demonstrate excellent flexibility and responsiveness to meeting the skills needs of business and industry located in the area. Other Third Level colleges include St. Angela’s College, Sligo, National University of Ireland, Galway, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, University of Ulster Magee Campus and North West Regional College, Derry providing access to a full range of academic and research facilities and a collective population of c.48,400 students.
The region has a highly skilled workforce, with a very good work ethic and competitive labour costs. In addition, residential property costs in the North West are significantly lower than the national average. These factors make the region attractive for skilled graduates and inward investors.
The North West is noted for its beautiful scenery and its picturesque landscape and coastline. The region’s most famous literary son W.B. Yeats is one of Ireland's most renowned poets. The North West’s new connection into the International Communications network facilitates fast, low-cost and state of the art communications which makes the Region a more cost effective base for international business.
The project – called Project Kelvin - involved Hibernia Atlantic connecting into their existing submarine telecommunications cable which was brought ashore in Co. Derry thus providing two secure routes, one from NI to the U.S. and another into the UK. This created the only diverse cable system offering secure circuits between Europe and Ireland with a protected ring between Ireland and the UK (via London, Manchester & Southport). The project includes a Carrier Neutral Interconnect Facility or Telehouse in Co. Derry which allows telecommunication and other companies open access to the international link, including direct access to the Letterkenny Metropolitan Area Network (MAN).
Communications between Ireland and North America are now routed directly without having to use external networks e.g. through Dublin or London, thus providing the North West with faster response times at lower cost for high capacity broadband.
The North West of Ireland including Letterkenny now has access to the same International services as found in major cities including Dublin, London, Amsterdam and New York.

The University of Ulster (25,000 students in total) also services the area with 3,900 students enrolled at its Campus at Magee, Derry located approx. 40 km (25 miles) from Letterkenny. The North West Regional College also located in Derry provides access to approx. 25,000 students. FAS the National Training Agency have a Training Centre located in Letterkenny with an output of over 1,500 trainees per annum.
