Airtricity in IrelandFollowing the deregulation of the electricity industry in Ireland, Airtricity signed up its first customer in the Republic of Ireland in January 2000. The company now supplies green, renewable electricity to over 38,000 customers throughout Ireland.
Wind farm development is relatively mature in the Ireland and Airtricity is examining opportunities to acquire development projects from independent developers to enhance Ireland’s existing pipeline. While most existing pipelines are on land Airtricity is exploring the potential of offshore wind and in conjunction with GE Energy have developed the world’s first commercial application of offshore wine turbines over three megawatts in size off the East coast of Ireland.
Airtricity is working alongside a number of academic institutions including Dundalk Institute, University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork to further develop the potential of wind energy in Ireland.
Airtricity recently signed a €6 million data centre contract with Citadel 100 to supply green electricity to the data centre provider’s 60,000 square foot facility at CityWest Dublin.
Citadel 100 has switched to Airtricity in order to significantly reduce both its operating costs and carbon footprint as energy consumption in the CityWest facility is predicted to more than double within the next five years.
